Written in 1724, the work is a dramatic musical representation of the trial and crucifixion of Christ following the words of St John’s Gospel.
The chorus is deployed as the lynchpin of the piece, taking on the role of the crowd baying for Christ’s demise in a sequence of aggressive interjections. The story is narrated by a tenor solo ‘Evangelist’ with other soloists taking on the roles of Christ and Pontius Pilate. Between the dramatic sections soloists provide meditations and the chorus and chamber choir a series of chorale reflections.
The SOC are delighted to welcome back the Skipton Camerata and soloists Debra Morley, Hannah Grove, Nathan Vale, Peter Kirk, James Oldfield and Timothy Nelson for this performance (please note due to unforseen circumstances the soloists for this concert are different from those originally advertised).
