This request would appeal to any musician who feels a special connection with this work of Eliot’s.
Ideally I would like to perform the work sometime in September or October this year. I would like to offer it as a charity performance on behalf of the newly re-opened Merlin Theatre in September. I was its director from 1972 to 2005. It is now part of Freeman College, which offers a crafts and arts-based curriculum for young people with developmental disorders such as autism and ADHD. The theatre, as well as serving the needs of the students, will also once again be a community arts venue with particular emphasis on young people.
To say something about myself, - my work at the Merlin Theatre involved, among other things, directing the Merlin Players, a community theatre group attached to the theatre, occasionally acting, and giving poetry recitals, sometimes in association with music. Recently I took part in a song and poetry recital with a soprano and pianist, telling the story of the life and work of the German poet and dramatist, Goethe.
Early November this year I have been asked to recite the Four Quartets at a festival in Switzerland, commemorating the 50th anniversary of T.S. Eliot’s death, which would also involve music and dance. That is partly the reason I would like to give a performance here beforehand, celebrating Eliot and also the rebirth of the Merlin (which is in Nether Edge, Sheffield).
