From the 19th century we have a lesser known anthem by Rossini O salutaris hostia and the famous three motets by Anton Bruckner, which will sound particularly fine in St Marie’s. The 20th century is represented by the three motets of the Irish master of English choral music, Charles Villiers Stanford, Rachmaninov’s well-loved Bogorodistye dyevo and Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi caritas et amor complete this set.
Taking us into the 20th Century is Judith Weir’s arrangement of the plainsong chant Drop down ye heavens, and director Robert Webb’s own setting of Psalm 98 O sing unto the Lord, from where the concert’s title is taken. The programme is completed with two contemporary arrangements of spirituals, a gentle Steal away, and a suitably ferocious and exciting Joshua fit the battle of Jericho.
