Platform 4 are a Sheffield-based collective of four composers who share a common desire to explore new ground in contemporary music and to make their individual voices heard.
The four composers - Tom James, Tom Owen, Jenny Jackson and Chris Noble - met whilst studying for their postgraduate degrees in composition at the University of Sheffield and latterly formed the composer group, Platform 4, in 2010.
Since their first concert in 2011 they have tried to stage around two concerts a year which allows them the opportunity to showcase existing works and provides a framework to write new pieces. Initially these featured only work by members of Platform 4 but, more recently, they have begun to combine their work with existing works by new and established composers. The concerts are performed by themselves and musicians and friends from the Sheffield area, many of whom studied music at the University of Sheffield. Last year saw an artistic exchange between Platform 4 and internationally-renowned pianist Philip Thomas (who is also a Sheffield University Alumni) along with composers from Huddersfield, in which Philip performed new and existing works by the composers in concerts in Sheffield and Huddersfield.
Alongside these concerts, Platform 4 have sought to undertake collaborative projects with artists, writers, choreographers and other performers which, they feel, enriches their own practice and has produced some innovative outcomes away from traditional concert settings. Recent projects include 'Remote Performances' with artist Lisa O'Brien which explored the influence of remote locations and changing landscapes on an artist's work. The four composers wrote new work in response to paintings by Lisa O'Brien who is based in Scotland, and these were broadcast on radio Resonance 104.4 FM in August 2014. In June 2013 Platform 4 performed 'underscore' - an installation of live music and sculpture with Gillian Brent at the Hepworth, Wakefield. For more information about past projects visit the Platform 4 website.
Platform 4 concerts are FREE although audiences are invited to make donations towards the cost of hiring the venue and music. None of the composers or performers are paid and Platform 4 are hugely grateful to the performers who provide their time freely.
