Tom Owen introduces Platform 4’s concert with Philip Thomas at Upper Chapel this Saturday, 19 October, at 7.30pm.
Platform 4 is a collective of four Sheffield composers dedicated to performing new works in Sheffield, and taking our own works further afield.
On the 19th we are joined by the world-renowned pianist Philip Thomas, a virtuoso and interpreter-extraordinaire of experimental scores.
Philip is a regular pianist with leading experimental music group Apartment House, and features on numerous acclaimed recordings for the Hat Hut record label.
The programme, of piano solos and chamber works, will be a mixture of premieres and near-premieres of music by both Platform 4 themselves, Jenny Jackson, Tom James, Chris Noble, Tom Owen, and three counterparts from Huddersfield.
Much of the music will exploit Philip's talents at the piano, both in dense, elaborate, chaotic works laced with European avant-garde influences, and in more open-ended pieces in the experimental tradition.
