Sheffield Bach Choir

A 60 strong SATB choir that performs works from the Baroque masters through to modern classics.

Sheffield Bach Choir is the choir of the Sheffield Bach Society, founded in 1950. Over the years the choir has built a reputation for musical excellence, with dynamic performances of works both by the Baroque masters and of modern classics. The choir is excited to welcome a new conductor, Philip Collin, during the 2023-24 season, following the retirement of long-standing leader Dr Simon Lindley. An experienced choral conductor, Philip is no stranger to Sheffield, being the Director of Music at St John's Ranmoor, and previously of St Matthew's Carver Street.

The choir performs five or six main concerts in Sheffield each season, including a performance of Handel’s Messiah in early December each year, and three of the major Bach choral masterpieces - Bach’s Mass in B Minor, St Matthew Passion and St John Passion - performed regularly over a three-year cycle. Alongside professional soloists, the choir performs with the highly regarded professional players of the National Festival Orchestra.

Among other events organised during each season, the ‘Come and Sing Messiah’ has proved very popular. Social events such as 'bring a dish' buffets, carol singing, the President's celebration and the chorus dinner are, similarly, encouragingly supported. On occasion, Sheffield Bach Choir presents, and participates in, concerts outside Sheffield.

The choir is always keen to welcome new members. Singers who are interested in joining the choir are invited to join us for a few Monday rehearsals prior to an audition. Please contact us if you would like to find out more about the choir by contacting the secretary or by visiting our website which also includes lots more information about the choir and importantly the programme for the coming season.
